The first day in Kyoto
Friday 2004-11-12
The eastern side of Kyoto is considered to be the best place to get an introduction to the city, and Japanese culture and tradition. So that's where I went. I began in the Gion area. It's an area of traditional buildings and is also known as 'birthplace of the Geisha.' Walking down the side streets is like jumping into a time machine and going back into Japan's past. Highly recommended! I visited several temples and shrines in the area - Kenninji and Kodaiji amoung them. The Kodaiji and Chion-in temples will be lit up after dark, so I plan to return to see that this evening. I walk into the center of town to see more of that area, then walk back to the Gion area. After eating a nice meal I return to see the Kodaiji and Chion-in after dark. The temples are lite up, as are the gardens around them. Very beautiful. A good way to end the day.
