Sightseeing in Wellington and the drive to Ngwai
Friday 2004-03-26
I spent the morning walking around the downtown of Wellington. Sightseeing, looking at the shops, etc. Carol and I met at 12:30. I left some of my things and my car at her apartment. We stopped for lunch and to pick up some food for the weekend. We had a cottage rented for the weekend in Ngwai. Ngwai is a very small fishing village (population about 50) at the southern tip of the North Island. The cottage is a classic New Zealand vacation cottage called a 'Bach' - pronounced like 'batch'. A Bach is a very simple house. I described it to Carol as a shoebox with windows. They are much nicer inside than they sound, but from the outside they are very simple and functional. The drive from Wellington to Ngwai took about 3 hours. We arrived about 5:30 pm. Just enough time to settle in and then watch the beautiful sunset. We made a simple dinner of meat pies and a salad. We shared a bottle of red wine and just talked until 11 pm or so.
